Tucson / Mt. Lemmon, AZ
Southern Arizona
Winter riding capital of the West — descend from pine forest to saguaro desert on a single ride, then refuel with Sonoran street tacos.
About Tucson / Mt. Lemmon
Tucson is where you ride when everywhere else is buried in snow. Mt. Lemmon's Catalina Highway gives you a paved road from 2,500 ft cactus desert to 9,100 ft pine forest — the backbone of the Lemmon Drop, one of the longest mountain bike descents in the country. Down on the desert floor, Fantasy Island, Sweetwater Preserve, and Starr Pass offer fast Sonoran singletrack through saguaro forests. Add a James Beard-winning food scene and bike-obsessed breweries and you've got a legitimate multi-day trip.
Primary season October through April — this is a winter destination when the rest of the West is snowed in. Desert floor trails are best November through March; summer above 100F is dangerous below 4,000 ft. Mt. Lemmon summit (9,157 ft) rides comfortably in summer. Monsoon season (July-September) brings afternoon thunderstorms at all elevations. Spring wildflower bloom (Feb-March) makes the desert trails magical.

Gear Essentials
What you'll want to bring or buy before the trip. Opinionated picks based on the terrain, climate, and rides.
Tires
Sonoran desert is brutal on tires — volcanic rock, thorns from prickly pear and cholla, and goatheads everywhere. Run tubeless with extra sealant (4+ oz per tire). Carry plugs and a spare tube. Tire inserts (CushCore) worth the weight on the Lemmon Drop.
Hydration
The desert dehydrates you faster than you think, even in winter. 3L minimum on any ride over 2 hours. Lemmon Drop has zero water resupply. Electrolyte mix is non-negotiable. Start hydrating the night before.
Apparel
Sun protection is critical year-round. Long-sleeve UV jersey, sunscreen everywhere, cycling sunglasses. Desert mornings can be surprisingly cold (40s) but warm up fast — layer. Lemmon Drop summit can be 30 degrees cooler than the base.
Protection
Cholla cactus ('jumping cholla') is the real hazard — segments detach and embed in skin, gloves, and tires on contact. Carry a comb or multi-tool to remove spines. Knee pads for Lemmon Drop and Starr Pass.

Epic Rides
Full Lemmon Drop
The big one — 30+ miles from pine forest at 9,100 ft to cactus desert at the base. Five biomes in a single ride. Tucson's Whole Enchilada.
Shuttle: Shuttle to Aspen Draw Trailhead at the summit via Catalina Highway. Home Grown MTB runs the dedicated shuttle.
Self-shuttle: Drive up Catalina Highway to the summit (~1 hour), stash a car at the bottom finish point, and ride down. Requires two vehicles or a willing driver.
Season: Best October through May at lower elevations. Summer is fine for upper sections. Full link-up is a long day — start early. Monsoon storms (July-Sept) make upper sections dangerous.
Beta: Starts at Aspen Draw Trailhead near Summerhaven. Links Green Mountain, Bug Springs, Molino Basin, and La Milagrosa. Significant hike-a-bike sections and exposed rocky terrain. Carry 3+ liters minimum — no resupply. Only for experienced riders comfortable with 6+ hour days in remote terrain.
Lemmon Drop (Green Mountain to La Milagrosa)
The shorter, more popular version — still a massive descent with the cactus-to-pine transition, minus the highest alpine section.
Shuttle: Shuttle to Green Mountain trailhead partway up Mt. Lemmon. Home Grown MTB stops here on the way up.
Season: Year-round at this elevation range. Best November through April. Summer mornings work but start early.
Beta: Starts at Green Mountain trailhead, descends through Bug Springs and Molino Basin to La Milagrosa. More manageable than the Full Lemmon Drop — still a serious ride. This is the version most visiting riders do.
50 Year Trail
Tucson's north-side classic — rolling desert singletrack through saguaro forests with a chunky upper section.
Season: Best October through April. Summer is dangerously hot. Requires Arizona State Lands recreation permit.
Beta: Access from Golder Ranch Road trailhead in Oro Valley. Lower section is flowy and fun; upper section gets rocky and technical with big granite slabs. 'The Chutes' section near the north end is a highlight. Bring more water than you think. No shade.
Fantasy Island
Tucson's OG trail system — 22 miles of one-way desert loops through saguaros, with quirky trailside art and something for every skill level.
Season: Best October through April. Mandatory counterclockwise direction.
Beta: Park at the large dirt lot off Harrison Rd and Irvington on the south side. Ride counterclockwise only — one-way system. Cactus Loop (~6 miles) is a good intro; full system is 16+ miles. Watch for quirky trail art — tombstones, witches in trees. Great morning session without shuttle logistics.
Sweetwater Preserve
The prettiest desert riding in Tucson — 15 miles of flowy singletrack through an 880-acre saguaro forest.
Season: Best October through April. February-March wildflower bloom is spectacular.
Beta: One main parking lot (gets packed weekends — arrive early). Saguaro Vista Trail is a good warm-up loop. For a longer ride link all the trails. Multi-use — watch for hikers and horses. Ranked #4 nationally on Singletracks.
Starr Pass
Rocky, technical desert singletrack 15 minutes from downtown — Tucson's after-work ride with real teeth.
Season: Best October through April. Exposed and hot in summer. Rideable year-round for dawn starts.
Beta: Park at the Richard Genser trailhead behind Starr Pass Golf Resort. Classic loop: Rock Wren > Yetman > Starr Pass Trail and back. Rocky, chunky terrain. Take plenty of water — zero shade, zero resupply. Great sunset ride.
