MTB Shuttle Logistics 101: How to Not Waste Your Ride Day
Shuttle-accessed rides are some of the best in the sport. But the logistics trip people up. Here's how shuttles actually work — booking, timing, tipping, and what to do when plans change.
How Shuttles Work
Most MTB shuttle operators run a simple model: they drive you (and your bike) to the top of a trail, and you ride down to a designated pickup point or back to town. Some run fixed schedules with set departure times. Others do on-demand runs when they have enough riders.
Booking
Almost every shuttle operator takes reservations, and you should use them. Walk-up availability exists at some operations (especially larger ones like the bike parks), but for backcountry shuttles to places like Porcupine Rim or Hermosa Creek, no reservation means no ride.
Book at least a week ahead during peak season (spring in the desert, summer in the mountains). Two weeks is better.
Day-Of Logistics
- Show up early. Most shuttles run on a tight schedule. If the van leaves at 8am, be there at 7:45 with your bike ready to load.
- Bike prep: Remove anything loose. Water bottles go in your pack. Dropper post down. Some operators ask you to remove the front wheel.
- Group size matters. Many vans hold 6-8 bikes. If you're a group of 5, call ahead — you might get a dedicated run.
Pricing
Expect $30-60 per person per run in most markets. Whole Enchilada Shuttle in Moab charges $35-45 depending on season. Some operators offer multi-run packages or season passes.
Tipping
Yes, tip your shuttle driver. $5-10 per person is standard. These folks are hauling your $8,000 bike up a dirt road at 6am — they've earned it.
When Plans Change
Weather happens. If it rains and trails are closed, most operators will let you reschedule or issue credit. But don't no-show — that spot could have gone to someone else. A quick call goes a long way.
Self-Shuttling
Some rides can be self-shuttled with two vehicles: park one at the bottom, drive to the top. This works well for smaller groups and saves money, but it requires local knowledge of where to park. Check our destination pages for trail beta on self-shuttle options.
